NARA explores implications of mobile for records management
The increasing use of mobile devices at federal agencies may have broad implications for records management, something the National Archives and Records Administration has set out to address.
Beth Cron, a policy analyst at NARA, wrote a post on the agency's blog March 13 that provided an overview of the agency's objectives, the first in a series of three promised blog posts to explore what mobility means for records management. NARA is seeking input from other agencies as it works toward a formal policy on mobility.
Agencies are expected to expand bring-your-own-device policies in the coming years, to take advantage of cost savings, let employees use their preferred mobile devices and accommodate the younger generation in the federal workforce. Many officials, particularly in agencies that handle sensitive information, have urged caution about BYOD because of security concerns.
But BYOD raises unexplored questions for records management as well. For instance, it's unclear which records on employees' personal devices would be subject to Freedom of Information Act requests if federal employees use those devices for work.
In response to a comment left on the blog, Cron notes that the implications of BYOD for FOIA requests is "definitely an area for concern," and that NARA hopes to address the matter as part of its broader mobility policy.
